How General Motors IS collaborating online

  1. Why did it take GM over four years to design a new car?

GM has to choice to take about four years to design a new car because they are lack of communication and collaboration in delivering information. In designing just a new car it involves about 20 000 designers and engineers in hundred divisions and 1000 key suppliers from different countries.

  1. Who collaborated with whom to reduce time-to-market?

As alternative to reduce time-to-market GM has collaborate with E-Business where it may be defined broadly as any business process that relies on an automated information system. Via this methods enable companies to link their internal and external data processing systems more efficiently and flexibly, to work more closely with suppliers, engineers and designers and to better satisfy the needs and expectations of their customers.

  1. How has IT helped to cut the time-to-market?

IT helped to cut the time-to-market by enhancing the process of communication and collaborating via web collaborating. Thus, the system such unigrahics allows 3D design document to be share online by both internal and external designers and engineers by using EDS software. In addition, collaboration and web-conferencing software tools, such Microsoft’s Net Meeting and EDS eVis that added to enhance teamwork. By this supporting system it helps reducing time in vehicle-review process.

Besides, the existing GM’s Advanced Design Studio helps engineers, designers, digital sculptors, software programmers side by side collaborating on various aspects of each vehicle appearing on the screen. The people involved can save their time and cost of traveling because they can meet in front of the screen wherever they are and around the clock.

In additional, by using eMatrix, helps GM integrate with his business partner, Johnson Control to reduce cost of news set frame. This integration allows joint searching, designing, tooling and testing of the set frame in real time, expediting the process and cutting costs by more than 10%.

Using simulation, mathematical modeling and Web-based review process, GM be able to do electrically crash car rather do it physically which is costly and timely.
