Pervasive Computing at Mile Pub

  1. Why would customers appreciate this pervasive computing system?

In hospitality industry in the slogan such customer is king and customer always right is common. It means customer will be entertained and their request must be fulfilled. Whatever it is as restaurateur, we want our customer satisfy with our product and service. Through the implementation of iPaq PDA it helps to improve service quality of foodservice business. Any barrier such customer waiting for the foods, long queue, cold food, service of wrong order and unavailable menu items can be prevented. When this kind of  barriers avoided, customer get their food more quickly and pain of waiting will be reduced. The convenience of payment system which is via credit card that connected directly with the ordered system make the system managed smoothly. In the foodservice, product and service are the most important things that we have focused on to satisfy our customer.

  1. What strategic advantage is generated?

This gadget only gives convenience to the server and customer in reducing errors during ordering but also improves the all operation of the restaurant that includes procurement and inventory management. As orders transmit, executive chef simply track raw material purchases against the food orders and identify waste or other delivery and processing problems. Thus, integration with enterprise database and inventory control systems helps reduce of cost operation, improve workflow and better inventory and personnel management.

  1. If such a system is beneficial to all, why have not all restaurants adopted it?

There are several factors that the restaurateur has to consider before implementing this system

    1. How big the restaurant is? If it such a big operation, I think it is reasonable to install the system because it hard for human to manage big operation, for instance a big or double storey restaurant where it needs enough energy and stamina.
    2. What types of foodservice? If it a restaurant, food court and  hotel fine dining which is medium level of  customer and can occupied big number of people at one time, it really need this system to run the operation smoothly. Anywhere the foodservice establishment such school canteen and small restaurant are not suitable to implement in kind system because it is a small foodservice operation.
    3. Types of services provided that suitable to implement the system are table service such American, French and Russian service. Service such home delivery, drive through, counter service, take away are not suitable.
    4. Cost of installation and training of the system also have to consider.

     d.  Why it is classified as pervasive computing

According to en.wikipedia.org pervasive computing is also known as ubiquitous computing which is integrates computation into the environment, rather than having computers which are distinct objects. This system created to enable devices to sense changes in their environment and to automatically adapt and act based on these changes based on user needs and preferences. In this case this mobile gadget can sensitively detect the changes in inventory while order transmitted.
